ABOUT NEVILLE TAN

Ever since his early life, Neville was a well-known figure among his peers for his bravery and leadership, especially among the "down-trodden" in the society of his day, and it was not surprising when the day came when, still young then, they made him their leader to champion their cause and to redress their problems.

Neville's life changed for the better in 1969, far beyond human expectation.  It defies the oft-repeated so-called words of human wisdom.... "A leopard never changes its spots". For those who know Neville personally from his earlier days... we can confirm deep in our hearts that only God could have effected such a miraculous change in this person's life... he was nicknamed the "Iron man" in his pre-changed life.

The hardships, the tortures, of the mind and body, the whipping and all the scarring and humiliation he received, are all testimonies to the pride and iron-will of the ex-prisoner Neville... now transformed by the power of God to be a servant of the great God... Who, at one time, he took for granted, and for Whom he had no place or time in his life for. After his release from prison, Neville went to work as an accountant for a departmental store in Singapore. In June 1972, Neville felt God's calling into full-time service. He quit his well paying job to enroll into the Singapore Bible College for Theological training. There he met and married Anne Foo Ah Hong, then secretary to the Dean of studies at the College. They were later commissioned by God through Church Leaders to serve as missionaries.

In 1979, they pioneered the Church of God (Evangelical), a Missionary Church in Singapore. Today they are still pioneering churches, having started churches in Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam. They still continue to help in the youth ministry, seeking to stand in the gap between misguided youths, street kids, in the prisons and Boys’ Homes.

Paul and Kaelea with parents

LATEST UPDATE

We have just returned from Anderson, Indiana after attending our son Paul Tan's wedding to Kaelea Barnum. Neville was privileged to conduct the wedding "Singapore Style" with Anne and some family members dress in their traditional "Peranakan Kebayas"

The wedding was attended mostly by Paul and Kaelea's friends, University classmates, working colleagues and some close friends and family members. Kaelea is from Wisconsin and they met at Anderson University. There was a moment of silence just before the ceremony to honor the memory of Kaelea's father who was called home just five days before the wedding. His death was not unexpected as he had been struggling with cancer for several years. Paul and Kaelea together with John will be coming back to Singapore in April to attend Neville's 70th birthday Thanksgiving celebration.
